19th century, deep form with narrow flaring rim, densely painted underglaze blue stylized chrysanthemums and small polychrome painted figures and objects interspersed in open spaces, diamond-diaper border, with some over-gilding on blue decoration, 5 x 16-1/2 in.; with old rosewood stand gilding worn, otherwise good condition. Notes: Old paper label on bottom reads "Brought from Japan by a member of the Ringold
sic Expedition 1852". Due to an increase in the American whaling industry, Congress funded an expedition, led in part by Captain Cadwalader Ringgold, to survey and explore the Bering Straits, North Pacific Ocean, and China Seas in 1852, especially for the identification of plant species..
