Sake Set and Large Lacquer Bowl Japanese, old Edo period lacquer sake set for Shinto wedding ceremony, with stand and three graduated cups in crane and pine design in raised gold lacquer, in [tomobako] with inscription date for Tenmei 5 between 1781 and 1788, lacquer set 6 x 6 x 6 in., [old wormage to stand, cups good, tomobako with wormage, losses and stains]; large lacquer bowl with beautifully detailed raised gold design of [Karako] or Chinese children playing music around a large jar of sake, 3 x 9-1/2 in., [good condition]. Condition: . Notes: The wedding ritual is called [San-san-ku-do], which means “three-three-nine times,” where the bride and groom drink sake to bind them in matrimony.
