London, circa 1765, mahogany, inside right top drawer with label "Philip Bell cabinet maker and upholder at The White Swan against the South Gate in St. Paul's Churchyard, London, n.b. funerals a. darly inv & sculp" uppercase with molded corners with Greek key design over two veneered doors, opening to an open interior, lower case with four drawers, on shaped bracket feet, 74-1/2 x 50-3/4 x 24-1/2 in.

Provenance: Purchased from Victor Mahy, 1979; Property Deaccessioned by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Williamsburg, Virginia; all proceeds to benefit the Collections Acquisitions Fund

Note: Philip Bell was one of the few English cabinet makers whose work can be documented as being imported into Virginia. Martha Custis patronized Bell prior to her marriage to George Washington, and the Washingtons continued that tradition through the 1760s. Condition

good condition overall with rich, dark color, minor warping to upper doors, typical shrinkage cracks and warping to door panels, scattered veneer and molding repairs, lacking interior slides, appears to retain its original brasses, original feet with minor wear and abrasions

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
