(Japanese, 1908-1989) late 1940s, three porcelain pieces attributed strongly to Kawai Takeichi: two mold/slab-form bottle vases with floral and geometric designs in blue, red and green glazes, 8-3/4 in., [floral-decorated bottle vase in good condition; geometric-decorated bottle vase with minor kiln cracks along inside bottom foot (tested and holds water)]; small covered box with incised flower under clear glaze, 4-1/4 x 3 in., [good condition], (four pieces). Condition: . Notes: Kawai Takeichi was the nephew and heir to Kawai Kanjiro, one of the most innovative Japanese potters of the 20th century. Based in Kyoto, he studied with his uncle starting in 1927 and collaborated with him for almost 40 years. Prof. Bennett mentioned him and the Kawai studio extensively in his correspondence but did not state explicitly that these pieces were by him. Attribution is based on similar shapes and glazes known to be used by him. The lot includes the book [Mingei Legacy; Continuity and Innovation Through Three Generations of Modern Potters] from the Mingei International Museum, San Diego, California. The exhibition treatise includes the article “Kanjiro Kawai’s World Through the Eyes of His Apprentices” on page 35.
