Pair of Charleston Portraits: Mrs. J.W. Phillips, Mr. J.W. Phillips, 1834, both signed lower right "Jos.Jackson 1834", oil on canvas, 22 x 27 in.; matching period carved gilt wood and composition frames, 38-1/2 x 33-1/2 in.; with coin silver spoon, fiddle handle, inscribed "J. W. Philips", marks for Lindel Sprague (Columbus, OH 1815-1820 and Wooster, OH 1820-1875)

Condition

both paintings relined and restretched, surfaces cleaned and varnished, Mr. Phillips with small areas of retouch above his left shoulder and points scattered throughout, Mrs. Phillips with small points of retouch throughout and cheeks with small percentage retouched, both frames with some loss and cracks, separation at corners; spoon bowl with loss to tip, overall wear, minor chipping to gilt
