(New York/Maine,1870-1953) Stylized Trees, a hand-made thank you card with typewritten note in interior, signed lower right "Marin", watercolor and ink on stationary paper, 10 x 8 in.; carved wood frame, toning, hinged in, cellophane tape verso with associated staining. Notes: Transcription of interior typewritten note: Dearest Is., With all you have to do you are a genius the way you choose such appropriate presents and lovely wrapping paper. My sweater is heavenly - color and everything and I can't thank you and Bud enough for it. They are such a necessity down here I almost never wear anything else. It has been the most perfect month here until the day before Christmas when it began to pour and blow and it hasn't let up yet. It's too bad for the people who come down for the holiday and need to son and for the D's who are indoors most of the week. We went to two very nice dinner parties, one on Christmas Eve and one last night (Christmas night). The one last night had forty people ranging from an age about 85 down to me - believe it or not - and though it sounds ghastly it was very nice. Inscribed verso, purportedly by Marin's Aunt Lelia Currey, "gift to my mother from/John Marin" "Is." refers to Marin's maternal grandmother who raised him when he was ignored by his father after his mother's death in childbirth.
