(American, 19th century) The Quadrapeds of America, Vol. I 1851 Vol. II 1854 (MDCCCLIV) Vol III, 1854, Rev. John Bachmann, New York, Victor G. Audubon, publisher, brown embossed leather morocco, gilt-lettered spine, edges gilt  Note: Mary Iredell and Charles E. Johnson were half-siblings. Their father, Dr. Charles Earl Johnson (1812-1876), was the first Surgeon-General of North Carolina and served during the civil war. He reorganized the hospital system in North Carolina and opened the first military hospital in Raleigh in May, 186. He was one of the founders of the North Carolina Medical Society and was its president twice. It is possible that Dr. Fisher was a colleague of Mary Iredell's father and the Audubon volumes were gifted to her initially because of the association.  , Provenance: Dr. & Mrs. Fisher gift to Mary Iredell, 1868 (inscribed); gifted by her to her half-sibling, Charles Earl Johnson, Jr. (1851-1923) in 1888 (inscribed); by descent in Johnson/Iredell family
