(New York/New Mexico/New Hampshire, 1871-1951) Fifth Avenue Critics, 1905, (Sloan 2, Morse 128), edition of 100, signed lower right "John Sloan" and inscribed lower left with title and "Peters Bros. Imp.", etching on laid paper, 5 x 6-1/4 in. (plate), 9-7/8 x 11-1/4 in. (sheet); gilt wood frame,. Condition: hinged at three points, possibly trimmed at sides, light handling grime and very light toning. Notes: John Sloan speaks of this composition in his diary, "'These were typical of the fashionable ladies who used to drive up and down the avenue about 4 o'clock of an afternoon, showing themselves and criticizing others.... I think the portraits are good; people have recognized them years later.... Following the connoisseur idea, the proposed title of this plate had been 'Connoisseurs of Fifth Avenue' or 'Connoisseurs of Virtue'. But since the series seemed to lapse after this time, it assumed its present title.". Provenance: Kraushaar Galleries, New York, purchased 1984, purchased by William B. Thalhimer; Estate of Charles G. Thalhimer, Richmond, Virginia
