(American, 1816-1872)Niagara Falls, c. 1850-55, signed canvas verso "J.F. Kensett", oil on paper mounted on canvas (colourman supplied medium), 10 x 14 in., painted oval; reproduction frame, 15-3/4 x 12 in.; Note: John Frederick Kensett painted Niagara Falls from various views, numerous times during the 1850s. Many of his large scale Niagara paintings are in public institutions, including the Wadsworth Atheneum, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the White House. Of these, this small oval is clearly the same view as the 45 x 32 inch Niagara Falls painted in 1855 in the collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut. Kensett's Niagara views are a rarity at public auction, although one is known to have sold in 1990.; Provenance: Private Collection, Bedford, New York; by descent in the family; Private Collection, Asheville, North Carolina
