(German, 1722-1789) Johann Abraham de Boor (1732-1799), identified on label verso panel, unsigned, oil on canvas laid on academy board, 22-1/2 x 17-5/8 in.; possibly original carved and gilt wood and composition frame, flaking, craquelure, some retouch at edges; frame with minor losses. Notes: In 1783, Hamburg senator, Johann Caspar Voght appointed Johann de Boor a commissioner and sent him to Philadelphia to express official congratulations on America’s independence and to establish potential trade relations between the first elected government and Hamburg. The painter, Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder left Kassel during the French occupation in the Seven-Year war and stayed in Hamburg during which time he painted the family of Maria Elizabeth Timmermann. In 1766, Maria wed the prosperous wine merchant, Johann Abraham de Boor. After having children, she attended the academy in Kassel in 1777 where Tischbein was a professor. This portrait appears to be the pendant to the portrait of Marie Elizabeth de Boor, signed and dated 1781, listed in the Frick archives and in the collection of Julius S. Held, Bennington, Vermont. If so, de Boor would have been 49 years old.. Provenance: Private Collection

Condition

flaking, craquelure, some retouch at edges; frame with minor losses
