(American, 1828-1891)
Misty Afternoon, signed lower left, ?J. McEntee, 87?; oil on canvas, 11-1/2 x 19-1-1/2 in.; period gilt wood frame liner, 16 x 23-3/4 in.
Note: There are numerous entries in McEntee's diaries between 1886 and 1888 regarding a series of small studies and paintings "of effects", that McEntee completed on a daily basis as a way to make some much needed money. He "greatly enjoyed" completing this collection, and sold the group of 75 paintings at an auction of his work in March of 1888. While the date on this work is difficult to make out, it appears under magnification to be 1887. Combined with the subject matter, which is certainly the atmosphere, it is quite possible this was one of McEntee's atmospheric studies from that series.
