(New York, Born 1922) [Carnivale di Venezia] (Portrait of Elaine Sammons), a triptych, signed lower right "Jeremiah", oil on canvas, 72 x 121-1/2 in. (total); matching metal frame, original stretchers and tacking edges; frames with abrasions. Notes: Elaine Dewey Sammons, wife of Charles Sammons, was a philanthropist and chairman of Sammons Enterprises, Inc. She supported education, medicine, and the arts. But in Asheville, North Carolina, she was known fondly as the ‘Grande Dame” of the historic Grove Park Inn, where this painting was later deaccessioned after her death. The artist, Jeremiah Goodman, was approached at the Carnivale in Venice by Elaine Sammons who wished to commemorate this extraordinary event and her attendance there. This painting was intended for her Florida estate. There will be a major retrospective of the artist’s work in 2015-16 in Europe.. Provenance: Commissioned from the artist by Elaine D. Sammons, Grove Park Inn, Asheville, NC/Boca Raton, Florida while attending the Carnivale in Venice; Private Collection
