A Seated Man in a Tricorn Hat, collector's mark in ink verso "HP" (Lugt 1353b), a counterproof of a red chalk drawing on light green laid paper, 13-1/4 x 8-1/2 in.; gilt wood frame, 20-3/8 x 15-1/8 in.
Provenance: Swann Galleries, New York, January 23, 2003, Lot 208; Private Collection, Nashville, TennesseeNote:Artists of the eighteenth century frequently made counterproofs of their chalk drawings. A moistened sheet of paper was placed on top of a chalk drawing and then the two sheets were run through a printing press. Excess chalk from the original drawing transfers to the blank sheet. The resulting counterproof is a pale version with an even dispersal of chalk in reverse.ÿ
