Le trouble-fête (scène flamande de la fin du XVIIIème siècle), after the 1852 work held by Le Musée royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, signed on chair lower right "Madou", oil on canvas, 41-1/2 x 50-1/2 in.; possibly original fine gilt wood and composition frame, 56-1/4 x 74 in.

Jean Baptiste Madou is considered one of the most important Belgian genre painters of the 19th century. Le trouble-fête was exhibited along with another painting at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1867 and is considered one of his masterpieces.  It was acquired directly from the artist by The Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium. This duplicate composition may be a copy executed by the artist for another patron.

original stretcher and tacking edge, patched with related scattered retouch, canvas slightly loose, wax residue verso; frame with minor losses, restorations, separations
