Jean Baptiste Madou is considered one of the most important Belgian genre painters of the 19th century. Le trouble-fête was exhibited along with another painting at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1867 and is considered one of his masterpieces. It was acquired directly from the artist by The Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium. This duplicate composition may be a copy executed by the artist for another patron.
