Portrait of a Young Girl, circa 1895, estate stamp verso, oil on canvas board, 15-3/4 x 11-3/4 in.; original carved and gilt wood frame, crackle, cupping, loss to canvas lower right corner with related retouch, grime; frame with some loss to gilt surface. Notes: Jan Preisler studied at the School of Applied Arts in Prague (1887-95). He taught at the Academy of Arts in Prague starting in 1913. Considered 'a pioneer in modern Bohemian art’, his work can be separated into three phases, Art Nouveau, Symbolism and Expressionism. He was greatly influenced by many prominent artists of the day including Mucha, Munch, Rodin and Bourdelle, to name a few. The triptych Spring painted in 1900 for theTrade Fair Palace in Prague is perhaps his best known work. This portrait was also painted during this period and bears similarities in style and tone.
