Commission (4th President of the United States, 1751-1836), dated May 20th, 1815, appointment of Captain Thomas Stockton to Brevet Major in the Army of the United States, "to rank as such from the fifteenth of April...eighteen hundred and fourteen," signed "James Madison" as President in brown ink, countersigned by A.J. Dallas as Acting Secretary of War, partially printed on vellum, paper seal intact, 10-7/8 x 15-1/5 in. (page); modern wood frame toning, scattered foxing, fading, creases, pest damage to seal, stains, ghosting, pencil inscriptions recto, "Major Brevet(?), 6th Inf." in black ink over pencil inscription verso (probably not period); frame with abrasions.
