(Beaufort, North Carolina, born 1960) Running for Cover, 1999, signed lower left "Saylor" and signed, dated and inscribed with title verso stretcher, oil on canvas, 26 x 40 in., distressed wood frame; accompanied by the preliminary sketch in graphite, 6-3/4 x 10-3/8 in., unframed. Notes: Statement from the artist: The setting is on Core Sound on the coast of NC. The sailor in the spritsail sail skiff, which is a type of boat very common to this region of the coast, is desperately trying to get to the shelter of the abandoned mansion that sits eerily on Davis Island in the middle of the sound as a violent thunderstorm approaches. The top sail has been furled to keep from capsizing in the storm gusts. The wave action on the water indicates the shallow nature of the sound which in many places is only a few inches deep, so to add to the sailor's anxiety, running aground is also a very real threat. This painting is about a situation where there is no good choice. Either seek the "safety" of the snake and spider infested house or risk getting struck by lightning out in the open sound. When I first saw this house on Davis Island, it had a haunting Hitchcock quality to it, especially being situated where it was. So this painting doesn't really depict a scene as much as it does a nightmare, or more specifically a nightmare as metaphor for a very difficult life circumstance.. Provenance: Estate of June Montague Ficklen, Greenville, North Carolina
