(18th century)
Portrait of Seated Nude Man, and study of figure verso, unsigned, inscribed by collector verso in ink "Alesso Maggiori, Compro in Roma, L'anno 1817" (L. 3005b), red chalk on laid paper, sheet 12-3/4 x 8-3/4 in.; parcel gilt wood and decorated frame, 19-3/4 x 15-3/4 1 in.
Provenance: Alessandro Maggiori (18th/19th century) Faenza and Rome, Italy; Daisy Mei Gentilucci in Florence, Italy; Private Collection, Greensboro, North Carolina
Note: Lugt states, " purchased his drawings in Faenza, Rome, Bologna, and Naples, between approximately 1785 and 1810. On the sheets he purchased in Bologna, there is no date after 1800. All his acquisitions dated around 1810 are from Rome, and it can be assumed that his collecting career ended in Rome. It is from Rome that most of the sheets that we find of Maggiori provenance come, for example, those now in the Cooper Union Museum in New York (our L.457c), previously in the Piancastelli (L.2078a) and Brandegee (L.1860c) collections, and those in the J. Scholz collection, in New York (L.2933b)."
