Japanese, probably Edo period, black lacquer ground with raised gold lacquer floral background and ox cart with scattered mother-of-pearl inlay, speckled gold interior, and silver rims, 10 x 7-3/4 x 5-1/4 in.; the lacquer box includes a [tomobako] with yellow wrapping cloth with inscriptions on top including lacquer ([maki-e]), silver edge ([gin-buchi]), flower basket ([hana-no-te-kago]) and ([ShoGetsu]) painting, red artist or collector seal seen at left corner. Condition: minor abrasions and nicks on corners and bottom edges, scratches on bottom, solid surface, overall good condition. Notes: The size of the box, along with the oxcart motif from the [Tale of Genji], indicates its use as a lady's cosmetic box. Prof. Bennett said this was a gift from an old, prominent Japanese family.
