possibly Athens area, circa 1800, with figured and inlaid removable cornice, over two doors set with oval panels and line inlay, opening to adjustable shelved interior, lower case with finely fitted butler's desk, with twelve finely dovetailed and inlaid drawers and eight cubby holes, over three inlaid long drawers, finely constructed with yellow pine and poplar secondary, set on fine original scalloped skirt and French feet, finely grained walnut throughout, mellow brown color, 100-1/2 x 47 x 23-3/4 in. - Note: This desk and bookcase is documented by MESDA (file S-6429) and illustrated in Henry Green, Furniture of the Georgia Piedmont before 1830, catalog no. 156. It was also illustrated on the cover of Atlanta Arts magazine, October 1976.Arguably the finest surviving Georgia desk and bookcase from the Federal period, this example is distinguished by its fine construction, fully developed form with contrasting inlays and veneers, and its highly original condition. - Provenance: Private Georgia Collection
