(Edgefield, South Carolina, b. circa 1800's, d. after 1873) attributed to Lewis Miles Stoneware Manufactory, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, 1858, made by Dave Drake, runny mottled greenish brown and black alkaline glaze, bulbous form, inscribed "Lm Dec, 13 1858, Dave", two incised slash marks to back shoulder, applied lug handles, short straight neck, nicely rounded rim, 14-1/2 x 12 in.ÿ - Note: This jar was made during one of Dave's second most prolific years of signing and dating pieces while producing wares for Lewis Miles. - Provenance: Collection of Dr. Joseph T. and Gaile E. glaze voids and anomalies as made, kiln debris, 3 in. and 2 in. rim losses to exterior of rim, 1/2 in. glaze loss to rim interior, 1-3/4 in. and 1/4 in. chips to one handle, 1-1/2 in. and 1/4 in. chip to other handle, 6 in. hairline up from base that branches out 2 in. to the left, 1 in. to the right and 2-1/2 in. onto base, black and green paint remnants to interior, rim, and exterior base, minor wear to base edge, large areas of spalling on base
