worsted wool red sash with tassel ends,ÿover 110 in. total lengthÿÿ - Note: This sash very likely belonged to Major Palmer of the C.S. Artillery. Accompanying the sash is a typed information card that reads:"Given to Ashley Halsey, Jr., about 1960 by his son, the late Col. Jim Palmer, U.S. Army, a West Pointer and regular Army officer as his father (a Georgian) had been prior to 1861.Major Palmer commanded an artillery battalion at the Battle of Bentonville, N.C., in March, 1865, last large battle in that section and largest ever fought in North Carolina. So, in the same battle, did E.L. Halsey, Capt. CSA, command a battery (not under Palmer)Major Palmer's sash may have been one he wore while a U.S. officer before the war, for as I noted on seeing his gray, red-facinged artillery frock coat, CSA,ÿall the buttonsÿon it were pre-war USA buttons, apparently sewed on from the old blue coat by a thrifty tailor. (This coat was given to a Georgia museum by Jim Palmer's widow about 1962-3.)"This card is signed at the bottom in red by Ashley Halsey Jr. and dated 3/5/1972. - Provenance: From the Collection of Ashley Halsey, Jr., Alexandria and Spotsylvania, Virginia
