Mahogany Rice Bed
South Carolina, circa 1820, four poster form with elaborate leaf, rice, and spiral carved headpost, turned footpost with fan inlaid mahogany headboard, mahogany bold covers with inlaid surrounds, rectangular tester frame, turned legs with brass cuffs, 81-1/2 x 60 x 93-1/2 in.; together with an inlaid federal mahogany bed steps, attributed to Charleston, with locking hinged top, triple-lined inlaid facing, feet with brass casters, 17-3/4 x 25 x 20 in., reduced in height at top of posts, casters replaced, headboard with repaired splits (fan inlay possibly of the period), rails replaced (posts with plugged mortise holes from previous double rails), scattered surface flaws; casters replaced, losses at one foot at caster attachment, later removable fabric (set with Velcro), inside of lid with later brace, old scattered surface wear and flaws.
