Qing dynasty, peacock blue field with lions, mythical beasts, dogs, ruyi shaped clouds,ÿrunning dog form border, Chinese Kanji script, 13 ft. 6 in. x 13 ft. 1 in.Note:ÿPer family history this rug was gifted to the consignor's great uncle, George Evans, byÿthe Empress Dowager Tsu His (also referred to as Empress Dowager Cixi or ?Dragon Lady?) the noble consort of Hsien Feng (Xian Feng) and mother of his first born son. Mr. Evans was instrumental in work done on China's Grand Canal.Based on translation of the carpet?s Kanji, it appears to have been a gift to Emperor Hsien Feng (Xian Feng) from close court members in 1857 to celebrate the first birthday of his first born son, Zaichun, a significant occurrence in Chinese culture as it relates to inheritance of the throne. The carpet is described in the Kanji as an Emperor Carriage or throne chair carpet.Kanji Translation:Center Panel reads:ÿEmperor Carriage. Your loyal servants Tung Hui Wa, Wu Lyoung Tsi Syoung, Lyong grandchild (of ) Lee Sur, Chen grandchild (of) Tu Dong.
