Mr. Evans was instrumental in work done on China's Grand Canal.Based on translation of the carpet?s Kanji, it appears to have been a gift to Emperor Hsien Feng (Xian Feng) from close court members in 1857 to celebrate the first birthday of his first born son, Zaichun, a significant occurrence in Chinese culture as it relates to inheritance of the throne.
