La Tour Eiffel, spurious signature lower right "Antoine Blanchard..", oil on canvas, 12 x 15-7/8 in.; gilt wood and composition frame, 20 x 24 in.
Provenance: Private Collection, Knoxville, TennesseeNote:
Antoine Blanchard (1910-1988) is known as the artist that kept up with the demand for the work of Edouard Cortès, so much so his signature was often removed and Cortès' signature forged. As Blanchard's work gained in popularity, even he could not keep up with demand. Therefore, copyists used variations of his signature. The two dots after this signature is representative of a copyist.
