(American/Georgia, 1916-2001)
Buffalo Nickel, 2001, inscribed verso "One of Howard Finster's last pieces bought from Pauline Finster Summerville GA 7-12-02 Ted Oliver", latex paint and marker on plywood, 11-1/4 x 11-1/4 x 1/8 in.
Provenance: Property from the Collection of Ted and Ann Oliver
Note: Coin collectors will delight seeing this rendering of James Earle Fraser’s bison from the reverse side of his “Buffalo” nickel. Fraser is rumored to have based his depiction on Black Diamond, a longtime inhabitant of the Central Park Zoo in New York City. Fraser once wrote “the idea of the Indian and the buffalo on the same coin is, without doubt, purely American and seems to be singularly appropriate to have on one of our national coins.” The version presented here by Finster is interesting in that it shows a “Denver” mintmark and a Type 2 reverse.
