two panels with repeating examples of cards number 51 through 54; 57 through 60; 63 through 66; and 69 through 72; each 13 x 16 in.
Provenance: Private Collection
Note: The “Horrors of War” set comprises 288 cards and is widely regarded as the most important and desirable non-sport card issue ever produced. Originally conceived as a 240 card series chronicling three major conflicts - the Second Sino Japanese War, the Second Italo Ethiopian War, and the Spanish Civil War - the set was subsequently expanded with a 48 card second series documenting the rise of Nazi Germany and the ominous events leading to the outbreak of World War II.
A landmark of 20th-century non-sport card collecting, “Horrors of War” remains one of the most coveted and historically significant sets ever issued, distinguished by its striking artwork, unflinching subject matter, and remarkable documentation of a world on the brink of global conflict.
