In 1839 Manning and his first wife, Susan Hampton Manning built Millford Plantation, a Greek Revival mansion located in what is now Sumter County, South Carolina. ˜To furnish his house, Manning made several trips to New York where he purchased over 47 boxes of furniture from the celebrated cabinetmaker Duncan Phyfe. The chair offered here is one of four armchairs listed as #9 "4 Mahog arm chairs" on a bill of lading dated June 2, 1841 and descended in the family of Manning's second wife Sally Bland Clark Manning.
