(New York/Connecticut, 1858-1916)
Tropical Landscape, signed lower left "H.W. Ranger" and inscribed with title verso and "#48", oil on panel, 11-5/8 x 16 in.; original gilt wood and composition frame, 19-3/4 x 23-3/4 in.
Notes: An important American tonalist, Ranger is closely identified with helping Florence Griswold and the establishment of the Old Lyme Colony in Connecticut. According to Amy Kurtz Lansing, Curator of the Florence Griswold Museum,
Ranger painted in Puerto Rico and Jamaica in the winters toward the end of his life. He went to Jamaica in February-March, 1908 and stayed at the Constant Spring Hotel. Many of Rangers works were sold at auction after his death and newspaper reports of the sales in 1917 mention two times works called A Tropical Landscape. One was sold to an H.K. Butler for $260 (reported in the New York Herald, March 30, 1917, p.6), and the other painting with that title is cited in the New York times as having been sold to Mrs. L.D. Montgomery for $310 with no mention of sizes in either case." The fact that the painting does not bear an estate stamp may suggest this version was sold during his life time.
