Note:
This painting was attributed to Henry Benbridge by Robert Stewart, curator at the National Portrait Gallery,
Washington D.C. It was then included in his exhibition catalogue for the Benbridge show in 1971.
Previously, the painting was thought to have been executed by Jeremiah Theus (1716-1774).

Ellis Ball, III acquired Pilmco Plantation in 1810. This property was part of a larger property known as Mepshaw
which was located in Kitteredge, South Carolina on the Western Branch of the Cooper River.
It was here that generations of Balls cultivated and sold rice and other goods, and prospered.
