doch Warhafftige Erklärung, von der Gelegenheit und Sitten der Wilden in Virginia by Thomas Hariot (1560-1621) Frankfort, 1600, with double-page Virginia map by Theodore De Bry (1528-1598) and black and white illustrations by John White (circa 1540-1593), a fine copy of Hariot's Virginia in German, De Bry’s illustrated edition of Hariot appeared as the first volume or fascicle of what became his multi-part America, and includes the first printings of the engravings based on John White’s famous on-the-spot drawings of American Indians and Indian life, this edition of Hariot’s Virginia also contains the second printing of the map drawn by White for de Bry, the first map by an Englishman of any portion of North America, with twenty-eight black and white plates, some of which fold-out and De Bry's important folding map, rebound into full green leather with five raised bands, gilt-decorated spine, red morocco spine label and blindstamping to the front and back boards, 14 x 10 in. some foxing to the sheets, one tiny closed tear to the map otherwise very good in a fine leather binding.
