Greek, 20th century, terracotta vase used for the mixing of wine and water, black painted figure technique with a red body, two large stylized scroll (volute) handles with low relief mask decoration, under a geometric pattern on the neck is an animal frieze depicting two lions, a stag and a swan, the shoulder is decorated with a repeating rectangular border, front side image depicts Heracles, wearing the Golden Fleece, in the act of taking the Cerynitian Hind, a golden-horned deer which was sacred to Artemis, and was one of his twelve labors, the reverse side of the body depicts soldiers in combat, one astride a horse, the other, a hoplite, wearing a helmet with a horsehair mane, and wielding a snake decorated shield, below the horse is a swan, leaf form decorated border near round base, 20-3/8 x 12-1/2 in..
