British, impressed Wedgwood mark, cream on Wedgwood Blue jasper, relief decoration at base, also known as the Barberini Vase, 10 in.

Note:

Modeled by Henry Webber and William Hackwood, this is a reproduction in jasper of the Portland or Barberini Vase, a first century cameo glass artifact, purchased in 1783 by Sir William Hamilton. The vase was then sold to the Dowager Duchess of Portland. Following her death, the vase went up for auction and was bought in June 1786 by her son, the third Duke of Portland, who immediately lent it to Wedgwood so that he might make a copy of the piece in jasper. The classical bas relief scene is thought to depict the myth of Peleus and Thetis (mother of Achilles). Each relief is individually made from a mold and applied by hand.

, Provenance: Historic Bremo Plantation, Bremo, Virginia
