The sitter was the son of Sir Henry Kingsmill (circa 1526-1592) and his wife, Bridgett (nee Raleigh, 1530-1607). He became the Sheriff of Hampshire in 1642. William Kingsmill was notably the step-nephew of Sir Richard Kingsmill, original owner of a property in Archer's Hope, James City County, Virginia and now known as Kingsmill Plantation.
