transcription: By His Excellency General Washington Esqr / Commander in Chief of the Armies of the / United States &c / Moses Downing, soldier in the second / Regiment of Massachusetts, having been certified / by a Board of Officers appointed for the Exami= / =nation of the Invalids of the Army, as unfit / for Duty either in the field or garrison / on account of the Rheumatism, is hereby / discharged from the service of the Unites States. / Given at Headquarters, Newburgh / This 10th Day of July 1783 / By Command / Jonathan Trumbull / G. Washington [signature], the docket on the back of the document reads “Moses Downing Discharge”, overall 11-1/4 x 8 in.

Note: Moses Downing (b.1749-d.1825) of Easton, Bristol County, Massachusetts was a soldier in the 2nd Mass Regiment 1777 Continental Army. Major engagements for this regiment include: Bunker Hill, Battle of Trenton, Princeton, and Saratoga; served under Colonel John Bailey. Also, this regiment was encamped at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777-1778. The regiment disbanded in November of 1783.

This signature has been verified by James Spence Authentication (www.JSALOA.com) and a letter of authenticity will be issued.

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction, or will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
