(German, 1851-1923) Woman Studying Manuscripts, Boston, 1881, signed on left page of illuminated book "Boston/Anno/1881/by George von Hoesslin", oil on canvas, 32-1/2 x 42-1/8 in.; modern gilt wood frame, crackle, lined and restretched on old stretcher, retouch throughout affecting less than 10% of surface; frame with abrasions. Notes: Von Hoesslin's family immigrated from Germany to American in 1856. After receiving education in the States he returned to Munich and studied under Wilhelm Lindenschmit (1829 -1895). 1880 marked his return to Boston, Massachusetts.. Provenance: Private Collection
