(New York/Massachusetts, 1825-1894) Quiet Hour, circa 1890, signed lower left "G. Inness", oil on plywood panel, 18 x 24 in.; early 20th century American Barbizon gilt wood and composition frame Plywood backed with strainer, craquelure, abrasions, indentation to middle right edge of panel, signature heightened or added (painting was indicated as possibly unsigned May 18, 1905), retouch center left, minor checks in panel; frame with minor losses, resurfaced.. Notes: Lot is accompanied by copies of original receipt and guarantee from William Clausen, New York City, dated May 18, 1905, for the amount of $320; letter from James B. Townsend to a Mr. Murdoch on New York Herald letterhead dated May 9, 1905, discussing the sale of the painting stating "…I am sorry indeed that the ladies could not see their way clear to paying the very low figure of $320 which the agent for the artist's estate will take. When your first telegram came I felt it would be useless to even offer the $300 for pictures by the late George Inness are always valuable and command high figures…"; and a copy of the receipt from Archie Shore Galleries dated November 29, 1965; Michael Quick has confirmed the authenticity of this painting and it will be included in forthcoming supplement to the Inness catalogue raisonné. The lot is accompanied by his letter..
