probably American, Boston area, mid 18th century, gilt edged scrolled paper shield with floral sprays and surrounded with plumed and cone decorations, mounted on paper lining, later shadow box painted wood frame, ink drawing of a shield and remnants of three wax seals verso, square 11 x 11 in., diagonal 15-1/2 x 15-1/2 in. - Note: The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has a similar paper scroll coat of arms that is attributed to Lydia Foster Hutchinson (Boston, 1686-1748) and is illustrated in theÿMagazine Antiques, December 1960, page 565. - Provenance: John Walton, Inc., New York, February 24, 1884, (accompanied by receipt); Property from the Collection of Dudley and Constance Godfrey

appears to be some minor missing elements, possible repairs and/or stabilization, some flaking and small losses to paper lining at edges, oxidation around remnants of wax seals, possible later backing, minor wear to frame, not examined out of frame
