(American, 1796-1872)
Le Chat d'Ostende, signed lower right "G. Catlin", dated 1868, oil on canvas, 18-1/2 x 25-3/4 in.; period carved gilt wood and composition frame, 26 x 38-1/4 in.
Note: George Catlin lived and worked in Belgium from 1860 to 1871, focusing on a body of work later known as The Cartoon Collection, based on his earlier travels among the Plains Tribes of North America. It is assumed that this is therefore a personal work, as the so called Cartoons were painted on affordable Bristol board, and the wonderfully whimsical subject matter is clearly unrelated. Catlin also wrote numerous books based on his earlier travels during his time in Belgium, and finally left for The States in 1871.
