(New York, 1867-1933) Otis Skinner as Col. Philippe Bridau in "The Honor of the Family", a preliminary sketch for the painting executed in 1919 and held by the Phillips Collection, signed lower center "George Luks", crayon on cream paper, 15 x 10-5/8 in.; gilt wood frame,. Condition: hinged in, remnant of masking tape verso at two points with related stains recto, toning; frame with abrasions. Notes: The finished painting was commissioned by Duncan Phillips and finished in 1919. Phillips admired the great actor and wanted a portrait made of him in the role of this "poseur and vagrant adventurer." The actor was too busy to sit for a portrait so he bought theater tickets for George Luks so he could sketch the performer in person.. Provenance: Henry Holt; Mayo Gallery, Richmond, Virginia, purchased in 1990 by William B. Thalhimer; Estate of Charles G. Thalhimer, Richmond, Virginia
