Portrait of a Lady, possibly Marie Mancini, wearing drop pearl earrings, a pearl necklace, a loose gown and holding a dove, unsigned, oil on canvas, 31 x 29 in.; 19th century gilt wood and composition frame,. Condition: lined with paste and linen, crackle, craquelure, areas of overcleaning with hair mostly affected , retouch with most in background, stretcher marks; frame with losses and abrasions. Notes: The niece of Cardinal Mazarin, she was a noblewoman of Italian birth and the early love interest of Louis XIV. The two were forbidden to marry by the Cardinal and Louis's mother. It is fabled that Louis XIV gave her the pearl drop earrings.
