(Polish/Lithuanian, 1745-1807)

A Visit to the Baths of Titus, circa 1780, titled in image in Italian [Vestigo delli Terme de Tito e loro Interne Pitture], signed at bottom "Francesco Smuglewicz pit...desgno?", collector's stamp verso (Lugt 788b), watercolor and gouache over pen and ink on laid paper, 20-3/4 x 22-3/8 in. (sheet); gilt wood frame, 25-5/8 x 27-1/8 in.

Note:

The German inscription verso, possibly in the hand of the collector and drawings scholar, Dr. Ludwig Pollack, states this is a 'gouache for the copper plate engraving.' The engraving was included in the book by Marco Carlone, [Vestiglia delle Terme di Tito] after drawings by Smuglewicz and V. Brenna published in 1780 by L. Mirri. There was a rare increased deluxe edition which also included original watercolors by Smuglewicz. Original watercolors by the artist are very rare with most residing in museums such as The Hermitage in St. Petersburg and the Louvre, Paris. See: Sotheby's New York: January 25, 2006, lot 148, for an identical work

Condition

hinged in, restoration to approximately ten tears with some loss near bottom inscription after signature, fading, toning, handling grime, stains; frame with abrasions
