dated June 22nd, Wood Pig Year (1935-1936), ink on paper, travel permit written in Tibetan script specifying passage to Shigatse, with copy of translation, 16-3/4 x 23-3/4 in.; modern carved, painted, and gilt wood frame, 25-1/2 x 27-1/4 in. Note: According to the accompanying translation: "...The contents of the order are: Cutting of America and companion, Vernay, both to be given permit of escort and service; 6 riding horses and 16 loading horses at the customary rates of hiring; provided also with fire and stove preparations; and sent to next station without hindrance or delay." The travelers for whom this permit was issued may be identified as Charles Suydam Cutting (American, 1889-1972) and Arthur Stannard Vernay (English-American, 1877-1960), two noteworthy naturalist explorers of the early 20th century who organized, sponsored, and completed many expeditions across the globe. While the Cutting-Vernay Expedition to Burma, undertaken from November of 1938 to April of 1939 is perhaps more widely known, the two also  completed an expedition to Tibet together in 1935 (Svenson, 1954), which is consistent with the year listed on this travel permit according to the translation note. Reference: Svenson, Henry K. A detailed genealogy will be provided upon purchase of this item. - Provenance: The Miller White Willis Mott Moore Collection, New York
