Assembled over the course of many years by a collector with great taste and great means, the sale features an important oil portrait by John Singer Sargent, painted in Paris in 1880. Hingham, Massachusetts, signed and dated "Lydia Loring/Derby School/1794", floral bouquet tied with a ribbon, silk on silk, sight 8 x 7-1/4 in.; giltwood eglomise frame, 13-1/4 x 12-1/2 x 1 in.

Note: According to the write up from M. Finkel & Daughter, "The Derby School, a well-known and highly regarded school for young ladies, was located in Hingham, Massachusetts and the embroidered pictures made there form on e of the earliest and most interesting of all groups of New England silk embroideries...The earliest known Derby School piece was documented in the 1921 publication American Samplers by Bolton & Coe, a sampler by Lydia Loring, and also dated 1794...

Lydia was born in 1781 to Joseph Loring and his 2nd wife, Ruth James, and was the last of his ten children. Her older brother, Josiah Loring, was one of the finest American cartographers and globemakers. In 1828 Lydia married the Hon. Lovell Walker of the nearby town of Templeton."

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction, or will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
