Note:Accompanying note from Louise Ayman dated November 7, 1985 states the following:
"The whittled whimsies are from the estate of Edith Lampson, Reno Nevada. They were made by Tom Hawkins born in 1823 an endentured (sic) servant brought to this country in 1837. Tom ran away when he was 13 or 14 and eventually ended up in Reno in the late 1860s or early 1870s. He was Edith's cousin by marriage and late in the 1800s he killed a man and spent many years in the jails in Aurora or Bodie in California. He and his wife owned the Ohio House in Reno (on Virginia St.) They also owned the Rhyolite Mine on Peavine Mt. north of Reno."
