North Carolina, circa 1845-1850, each with leaf carved heart pierced crest over a double swan form pierced splat, figured mahogany veneers, blue velvet upholstered slip seats, saber legs, 34-1/2 x 19 x 16ÿin., Provenance: Private Collection; Note: One chair stamped "22", indicating these chairs came from a very extensive set. Nearly identical chairs are documented to African American cabinetmaker Thomas Day (Milton, North Carolina, 1801-1861).

Condition

good structural condition with minor finish distress, scattered bumps, and abrasions to frames, period slip seats (not fully examined), each chair marked in black paint "49"
