American, 19th century, bulbous lobed body with grape and vine die-rolled border, domed lobed lid with dolphin finial, teapot with square hollow handle, creamer and sugar with scroll and foliate handles, most with marks for John Ewan (Charleston, South Carolina, working 1823-1852), waste with marks for I L Gale (probably John Lee Gale, New York City, working 1808 - 1835), monograms, 70.18 oz. T., 8-1/2 in. teapot with matching covered sugar, creamer and waste Notes: The J. L. Graham family owned grocery stores in Ottumwa, Iowa. Graham's Grocery Store was on Court Street. It became the Triangle Super Market in 1953(?) and then it became Ottumwa's first Hy-Vee in 195. The story goes: during the depression folks bought groceries on credit. My grandfather, M. P. Quinn (married J. L.'s daughter Helen), went out to collect debt. He liked "nice" things (he came from an incredibly poor Irish family), and took items such as silver to pay the dept. This set along with a service tray that has yet to be located was accepted payment towards an outstanding bill, but unknown as to what family it came from. It has been part of the Quinn/Graham family ever since, stored in a box until a couple months ago.

Condition

teapot and sugar bases bent, creamer with base dent, waste pushed in, all with dents, wear and scratches
