(American, 19th Century)
Family Portrait, unsigned, watercolor on paper, sight 13-1/2 x 17 in.; giltwood frame, 15-1/2 x 19 in.
Provenance: Michael L. Laughlin Estate, Aiken, South Carolina
Note: The location of the farm depicted is unknown but the gentleman at the right is wearing a Union Army uniform which suggests the North. The layout and use of birds below the central oval suggests a familiarity with fraktur as a means of marking important family occasions.
The two women in veils appear to be pulling back the curtain to reveal a group who are on the other side, possibly deceased. This idea is mirrored in the two trees that have been felled and create part of the supporting design along the bottom edge.
