20th century, tempera with gold leaf, abalone, paper-mache lacquer technique, gilt details on sides, comprising: one Kholuy school hinged casket with The Golden Cockerel story, inscribed gold cockerel verso, carved relief feet, original box, 6-1/2 x 6 x 2-1/4 in.; pair Fedoskino school hinged with Frog Princess and Frog Prince story, inscribed front in Russian and "2000", footed, 8-1/4 x 3-1/4 x 2-1/4 in.; rectangular unknown school with water god and angel story, inscribed verso Russian and "2003", ball feet, original box, [cracking to verso and front side panel], 9-3/4 x 6 x 1-3/4 in.; Fedoskino school set of caskets with Emelya and the Magic Pike story, guilloching, large inscribed under lid with four small story caskets on tray, abalone, "-03", [some lacquer cracking], 8-3/4 x 6-1/2 x 3-1/4 in. large casket and 3-1/4 x 2-1/2 x 1-1/4 in. small caskets

Russian lacquer folk art painting is greatly rooted in the 17th-19th century tradition of icon painting, which lasted until the 1917 Russian Revolution.  After the collapse of Imperial Russia, four centers of lacquer painting thrived in the Vladimir-Suzdal Principality, Ivanovo region of central Russia.
