British, 19th/20th century, various ale measures from Gill to Quart, copper with tin linings, all with rounded handles, liquid capacity stamped, lead seals, and one inscribed "Imperial 1826 Customs", some dovetail construction, 4 in. to 7-1/2 in. height
Provenance: Collection of Marion and Theodore Gore, Williamsburg, Virginia. According to the family, the Gores purchased most of their pewter, brass and copper from Jack Casimir Ltd. in London.Note:Note: To prevent the pub owner from cheating on their taxes, local officials would frequent establishments and verify that the size of jug was indeed correct, and if so, would paint a lead seal somewhere on the inside rim with date, inspector identification number, and a crown with initials of the current king or queen. On four of these jugs is evidence of these marks.
